David Kaufman Music

I came of age in the 1960s in Montreal, the only child of Jewish immigrant parents. During my late high school years I was completely immersed in the music of the folk revival and through consistent practice became a fairly proficient guitar player and capable enough singer. While at university, I began to write songs and gained acceptance as a performer in Montreal’s nurturing folk music community. My hope was to achieve significant public recognition for my work even if I had to support myself with a day job.

My ambition met hard reality when I moved to Toronto in the early 1970s. I had little success as a solo performer and found it difficult to write new songs. Still intent on making a living in the arts, in the following years I developed a career in documentary film and television, both at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and as an independent filmmaker. More recently I have dedicated myself to fine art photography, specializing in architectural imagery. Yet through all these years I have continued to feel the pull of my unfulfilled short career

David Kaufmann

David Kaufmann (7 June 1852 – 6 July 1899) (Hebrew: דוד קויפמן) was a Jewish-Austrian scholar born at Kojetín, Moravia (now in the Czech Republic). From 1861 to 1867 he attended the gymnasium at Kroměříž, Moravia, where he studied the Bible and Talmud with Jacob Brüll, rabbi of Kojetín, and with the latter's son Nehemiah.

Life

In 1867 he went to the Jewish Theological Seminary at Breslau, where he studied for ten years, attending at the same time the university of that city. In the summer of 1874 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig, and on 29 January 1877 he was ordained rabbi. In the latter year he declined the offer of a professorship at the Jewish Theological Seminary, preferring to accept instead the chairs of history, philosophy of religion, and homiletics at the newly founded Rabbinical Seminary of Budapest,[1] which he continued to hold till his death. He also at the same time taught Greek and German in the preparatory school of the same institution, carrying on this work in the Hungarian language, which he had r

David Kaufman once had a career as a folk singer; now we get to hear his songs!

Montreal-born, Toronto-based photographer, filmmaker and singer-songwriter David Kaufman is reviving the career as a folk singer that he enjoyed in the ‘60s with his superb debut album, Second Promise (Release date: May 10), a collection of songs created nearly 50 years ago, produced by Toronto guitarist and singer, Jason Fowler, and featuring some of Canada’s finest session musicians – including Burke Carroll and George Koller – with vocal assistance from some of Toronto’s best-known folk singers, including Suzie Ungerleider (Oh Susanna) and Aviva Chernick (formerly of Jaffa Road).

In the late 1960s, for a period of about five years, the now-70-year-old photographer and filmmaker had a brief career as a singer-songwriter in his home city of Montreal. He was part of the musical milieu that nurtured performers like the McGarrigles, Jesse Winchester, and Ronney Abramson. His ambition and his dearest hope was to achieve significant public recognition for his work, even if he had to support himself w
