Gerard David (c. 1460 – 13 August 1523) was an Early Netherlandish painter and manuscript illuminator known for his brilliant use of color. Only a bare outline of his life survives, although some facts are known. He may have been the Meester gheraet van brugghe who became a master of the Antwerp guild in 1515. He was very successful in his lifetime and probably ran two workshops, in Antwerp and Bruges.[2] Like many painters of his period, his reputation diminished in the 17th century until he was rediscovered in the 19th century.

Life

He was born in Oudewater, now located in the province of Utrecht. His year of birth is approximated as c. 1450–1460 on the basis that he looks to be around 50 years in the 1509 self-portrait found in his Virgin among the Virgins.[3][4] He is believed to have spent time in Italy from 1470 to 1480, where he was influenced by the Italian Renaissa

The city of Bruges was home to a number of great painters, of them the Dutch Renaissance painter Gerard David. As one of the last great painters of the Bruges School, David’s works were rediscovered in the late 19th century. Born in the Netherlands, in the town of Oudewater, he then traveled to the city of Haarlem, where he studied with the painter Albert van Ouwater (1440 – 1475), founder of the Haarlem School of painting. Moving to Bruges, where he would spend most of his career from then on, he joined the city’s Guild of Saint Luke for painters.

The leading artist of the guild at the time was Hans Memling (1430 – 1494), succeeding the style of Jan van Eyck (1385 – 1441) and when Memling died in 1494, David became the leading artist of the city. He eventually became dean of the guild in 1501 and became praised for his brilliant use of coloring in painting. He followed the great masters of Bruges, especially Memling, but also became influenced by Quentin Matsys (1466 – 1530), a leader of the Antwerp School of painting. The Antwerp artists would eventually replace t

Gerard David was probably born in Oudewater. After his training in Haarlem, he establishes himself in 1484 as master in Bruges. David is the artist who summed up the 15th Century, the century of Jan van Eyck, both technically and contentwise, and at the same time already stood in the 16th Century. With the mysticism, a religious disposition for the secret and concealed, and the special attention to the landscape, he belonged with Geertgen tot Sint Jans. In addition to this, Gerard David is indisputably influenced both by the Italian Renaissance as by the ‘Flemish' masters such as Memling and Van Eyck. Gerard David played an important role in the evolution of the landscape paintings that in the beginning of the 16th Century evolved to a self-standing genre under the influence of Joachim Patinir.
