Chennai's de Monte colony: From a spooky dark corner to a hot spot

CHENNAI: After featuring in Kollywood as a scary `haunted' place in the heart of the city , the properties of late John de Monte, the 19th century Portuguese merchant who made Chennaihis home, is finally going to be put to commercial use. A 6-acre real estatehot spot in posh Alwarpet is being retrieved from ruin and illegal occupation through a redevelopment plan by the church, unlocking high valuations of the assets left behind by de Monte, a handkerchief merchant whose story gained needless notoriety after a recent Tamil horror flick.

de Monte, a celebrated church benefactor, had committed his assets-estimated to be over 105 acres of land across prime locations in Chennai-to the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore to be intended for charity. His lands now rest on coveted spots on the real estate valuation map. Portions of Alwarpet, Luz, Teynampet, and even the Boat Club, a sought-after preserve supposedly second only to the Poes Garden, where the Tamil NaduChief Minister J Jayalalithaa and actor Rajnikanth reside.
