Taku Hirano '95 has become one of the top percussionists on the touring and recording circuit, having toured with Fleetwood Mac, Whitney Houston, Bette Midler, Lionel Richie, Isaac Hayes, Japanese pop superstar Utada Hikaru, and Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman H'14.

His live performance credits also include Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, John Mayer '98, Usher, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Josh Groban, LeAnn Rimes, Chaka Khan, Jamie Foxx, Brandy, Don Henley, Barry Manilow, Travis Tritt, Yolanda Adams, Cece Winans, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. 

Further, he has recorded with Fleetwood Mac, Dr. Dre, Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, The Temptations, Nelly Furtado, Stevie Nicks, Ziggy Marley, Jason Mraz, Josh Groban, Chromeo, and Lionel Richie; contributed to several scores and soundtracks; acted as a consultant to Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails for the “Lights in the Sky” tour; and has started his own clothing company, 3rd Culture Style.

Taku Hirano, one of the most in-demand percussionists of his generation - a musical chameleon onstage and in-studio, whether supporting iconic artists or fronting his own projects. He has worked with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Stevie Nicks, Dr. Dre to Dr. John, and referred to by Mick Fleetwood, founder and drummer for Fleetwood Mac, as his "Secret Weapon."

Taku’s client list of luminaries spans practically every genre. He has toured the world with Fleetwood Mac, Whitney Houston, John Mayer, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Lionel Richie, Dr. John,  LeAnn Rimes and Isaac Hayes. Taku Hirano

Taku Hirano is one of the most in-demand percussionists of his generation — a musical  chameleon onstage and in-studio, whether supporting iconic artists or fronting his own projects.  He has worked with everyone from Stevie Nicks to Stevie Wonder, Dr. Dre to Dr. John, and referred to by Mick Fleetwood - founder and drummer of Fleetwood Mac - as his “Secret Weapon” and “not only a master percussionist, but an incredible musician." Two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and music icon Stevie Nicks has proclaimed nightly on her solo tours that Taku is "the best percussion player, I think, in the world."

Born in Japan and raised in the United States, Taku was trained in European classical music, Black American Music, and Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, West African, Indian and Japanese percussion traditions. He attended Berklee College of Music for both undergraduate and graduate studies and was the institution’s first graduating hand percussion principal, with four-years of tutelage under Afro-Cuban percussion master Giovanni Hidalgo.
