Encouraging teachers, students, and science enthusiasts alike, the Central Mindanao University Physics Department and Bukidnon Physics Society held their eighth iteration of the Physics Meetup series last July 16 via Zoom and Facebook Live.
The session, titled Adventures in Astrophysics and Analytics, featured astrophysicist and data analyst Dr. Reinabelle Reyes, who has had her fair share of adventures in exploring the cosmos. Perhaps best known as the person “who proved Albert Einstein right”, she recounted her journey in Astrophysics and Statistics, offering a glimpse into her fields of expertise.
Curious beginnings
From an early age, Reyes had often found herself looking toward the stars; her “childlike way of seeing the world” kept her curious about heavenly bodies and their interactions with one another. “A lot of us outgrow this [behavior],” she expressed, prompting aspiring scientists instead to see it as a “challenge [to] keep that childlike way of seeing the world.”
Dabbling in Astronomy pushed Reyes to convince her father to buy a telescope, opening up a

Reina Reyes looks like science
A physicist from the Philippines
Reyes’ parents run a hardware store in a city just outside of Manila. She says having to run the cash register when she was younger taught her mental math, and her parents’ encouragement of her scientific curiosity was what eventually drove her to astrophysics. As her interest in stars and galaxies increased, her parents took her on trips to the planetarium and bought her a telescope.
Her pursuit of science took her to Philippine Science High School, a public magnet school for students interested in science, which she describes as fundamental to her education. “It’s great being with peers that are like-minded,” she says. “They’re interested in the same things you are, so you're not the only one that loves math and space. And of course, you challenge each other, you learn from each other. And you're not as isolated as you would be if you were in a normal school.”
After high school, she graduated from Ateneo de Manila University summa cum laude w

MANILA, Philippines – Think of Filipinos who have astounded the world lately, and the first names that come to mind are likely to be Manny Pacquiao or Charice. The two definitely earned their Pinoy-pride accolades, but they aren’t the only ones who deserve it.
Meet Reinabelle Reyes, a 28-year-old astrophysicist who astounded scientists all over the world when she proved Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity on a cosmic scale. That was when she was only 26.
Einstein’s theories have been verified many times, but it took Reyes and her Princeton University collaborators to verify his Theory of General Relativity, beyond the confines of our solar system.
Led by Reyes, the research team made headlines back in 2010 when they showed how galaxies up to 3.5 billion light years away are clustered together in exactly the way General Relativity predicts. They came up with a new astronomical measurement, which indicates how galaxies are pulled together by gravity, just as Einstein theorized.
Her findings also support the existence of Dark Energy—a force greater than gravity once
