Biografia

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Roman Gribbs, who became the 65th mayor of Detroit mayor in 1969 at a time the city was trying to rebound from the devastating 1967 riot, died on Tuesday. He was 90.

Gribbs served only one-term and decided not to run for re-election. He was succeeded by Coleman A. Young in 1974, who became the city's first black mayor.

"Roman Gribbs was the textbook definition of a dedicated public servant,"  Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said in a statement. "Through a career that stretched nearly half a century, and in his roles as an assistant prosecutor, a respected judge, and as sheriff and mayor, he admirably served Detroit -- a city he loved dearly. I am grateful for his service, and my heart goes out to his family."

Born Dec.  29, 1925, he was raised on a farm near Capac in the Michigan Thumb,  according to a bio by Stacy Newman for the Detroit Historical Society.

After high school, he  served in the Army from 1944-48.  After return
