Joe Garagiola

Hundreds of ballplayers, from Jack Graney to Alex Rodriguez, have traded their gloves for microphones. Joe Garagiola, the second-best catcher from Elizabeth Street in St. Louis, was the most successful. Branching out from his roots as a baseball announcer, he filled in for Johnny Carson as host of the Tonight Show, served two terms as co-host of NBC’s Today, and emceed network television game shows.

He hardly fit the mold of a TV star: in his words, a “fat, bald Italian who drops his Gs.”1 But he was quippy, cheerful, and down-to-earth. Many television critics called Garagiola an Everyman who connected with the audience whether he was broadcasting a ball game, interviewing a poet, or describing a dog show. He held his own alongside some of the most celebrated personalities of the second half of the 20th century: Harry Caray and Vin Scully, John Lennon and Barbara Walters.

Joe Garagiola, Jr.

Joe Garagiola, Jr. is special advisor to the president and CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He previously served 13 seasons at Major League Baseball. In his capacity as a consultant, Joe was involved in a variety of matters including on-field discipline, uniforms, ground rules, and official scoring appeals. Previously, Joe was the Senior Vice President of Standards and On-Field Operations for MLB. Prior to joining the Commissioner's Office in 2005, Joe had been the General Manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks from their inception.

Garagiola joined the Diamondbacks in March 1995, when the franchise was awarded to the region, but it was his work on a variety of civic panels that served as a driving force in bringing major league baseball to the Valley.
