John Clarkson Stewart, professionally known as John Altman, is an English actor and singer most widely recognised as EastEndersvillain 'Nasty' Nick Cotton. He was born in Reading on 2 March 1952 and has been an actor since 1979, with his debut appearance in neo-noir crime film The First Great Train Robbery.

"As a child I was painfully shy… but joining an amateur dramatics company as well as the local swimming club helped bring me out of my shell," he told The Express in 2016. He went on to reveal that acting has long been in his family. His grandfather, Johnnie Schofield Jr, appeared in old TV films including 1942's Went The Day Well.

John Clarkson Stewart (born 2 March 1952), known as John Altman, is an English actor and singer. He was among the original cast members of the BBC soap opera EastEnders, playing Nick Cotton, appearing in the first episode in February 1985 and remaining on the show as a recurring character. His character was killed off in the 30th anniversary episode of the show which aired in February 2015. Altman has also appeared in several films, television series and stage productions. John Altman began his musical career at age 3 with Judy Garland at the London Palladium! Commencing his recording and live career as an in-demand saxophonist in the late 60s he has performed with all the major figures in music over the last few decades, including Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Muddy Waters, Nick Drake, Eric Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins, Jimmy Page, Little Richard, and Van Morrison and Hot Chocolate (for both of whom he functioned as musical director) and many more. He has recently contributed saxophone solos for the new albums by Rick Astley and Goldie.

Beginning in the mid 70s he found great success as an arranger/conductor. Among his hit records have been Aled Jones Walking in the Air (which he also produced); Alison Moyet's That Ole Devil Called Love, Simple Minds Streetfighting Years, Rod Stewart's Downtown Train, George Michael's Kissing a Fool, Prefab Sprout's Hey Manhattan, Tina Turner and Barry White's
