About the Author

Barney Saltzberg was born in Los Angeles, California. He fell in love with drawing at an early age, encouraged primarily by his mother, who bought him drawing pads instead of coloring books so he could create his own art. Barney went on to study art at Sonoma State College in Northern California. show more Barney moved back to Los Angeles in the late 1970's and took a class at Otis/Parsons in children's book writing and illustration. His first published children's book, It Must Have Been the Wind, came out of that class. He now has published close to thirty books. Saltzberg carries around a sketchbook and is constantly doodling and writing things down. In addition to writing and illustrating children's books he has recorded two albums for children. Where, Oh, Where's My Underwear? and most recently The Soccer Mom From Outer Space! He has also written and produced songs for the PBS show, Arthur. (Bowker Author Biography)show less

Barney Saltzberg = Biggest Surprise

As I wrap up my last post about the Texas Book Festival, it’s important to note that today’s author, while last, is definitely not least.  As a matter of fact, he was the biggest surprise to me.  Since I’m currently working on 2 manuscripts for children’s picture books (ages 4-8), I was “bouncing-in-my-seat happy” to hear from Rob Scotton, Tad Hills, and Philip Yates.

When I read Mr. Saltzberg’s biography, his appearance on the panel didn’t excite me.  I saw he’d written many board books for preschoolers, but had just published his first picture book, Andrew Drew and Drew.  http://youtu.be/m5jeZJ8Renw

 

What I thought I really needed was to hear from the other authors who had done what I hope to do.  Surely this guy had nothing to offer me.

But I soon discovered how wrong I was.

BARNEY SALTZBERG is the author and illustrator of Beautiful Oops!, Crazy Hair Day, Chengdu Could Not, Would Not Fall Asleep and the bestselling Touch and Feel Kisses series, and many other beloved children's books.

Having written songs since he was 8 years old, Barney fell in love with a picture book after graduating art school.  He realized he could combine his love for writing and illustrating to create children’s books. His 50 plus tittles have received multiple awards.

Also a singer-songwriter, Barney has recorded four albums for children including; "Crazy Hair Day" and "The Soccer Mom From Outer Space!”. He has also written and produced songs for the PBS show "Arthur."

Barney has traveled to Russia and China for the United States, State Department, as part of the cultural exchange program.  He has lectured on creativity in universities, public libraries, and schools all across the United States.
