New York’s Senator Chuck Schumer was first elected to the Senate in 1998. After New Yorkers re-elected him in 2004, Chuck secured two powerful posts: a seat on the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees the nation’s tax, trade, social security and healthcare legislation, and the Chairmanship of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC). Chuck successfully led the DSCC for two consecutive cycles and greatly expanded the number of seats in his conference. Following the elections of 2006, then-Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) appointed Chuck to serve as Vice Chair of the Democratic Conference, the number three position on the Democratic Leadership team. In 2016, Chuck was again re-elected by the people of New York. Charles “Chuck” Schumer is a Jewish American politican who is currently the senior senator from New York.

Schumer was born on November 23, 1950, in Brooklyn to a Jewish family of Russian, Polish and Austrian descent. After graduating from James Madison High School, he attended Harvard University and earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1974. He was elected to the New York State Assembly at age 23, one of the youngest members since Theodore Roosevelt, and was first elected to the House of Representatives at age 29. In 1998, Schumer upset Al D’Amato to become New York’s junior Senator. Schumer was re-elected in 2010 and again in 2016.

Schumer is currently serving, or has served, as a member on the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, the Judiciary Committee and the Rules Committee. Before his election to the Senate, Schumer represented the Ninth Congressional District in Brooklyn and Queens for nine terms.
