Larry Poons
Born in Tokyo, Japan, Larry Poons became a prominent figure in Optical Art and in the Color-Field school of painting in New York. His paintings of the 1960s were characterized by dots of color placed according to a horizontal vertical and diagonal grid against a rich colored ground. The effect was a sense of movement--thus Optical Art. In 1965, he exhibited with the Op Artists, but the next year, his art became looser with small colored shapes floating in space. From that time, he changed to expressionism and abstraction. Poons has also created Earth Art such as his "cracked earth landscapes". For these he uses layers of heavy impasto to create the effect of flowing lava and craggy plateaus.
A musician before becoming a painter, Larry Poons studied at the New England Conservatory of Music from 1955 to 1957, and was much influenced by the experimental compositions of John Cage. He is a former member of the band U-Turn.
Early life
Poon was born on December 8, 1973, in Makati, Philippines. His parents, Robert Poon (from Hong Kong) and Eva Huang (from Taiwan), are of Chinese descent. He has a sister named Eva Marie.
Personal life
Poon married Maricar Reyes on June 9, 2013, at the Bellevue Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa.[2]
Career
As a musician, Poon has performed in various lounges and bars across Metro Manila with his four-piece band, as well as in weddings. He used to regularly perform at Eastwood Central Plaza.
As a recording artist, he is known for covering standards and classic pop songs, including Filipino songs. He has also written songs, including "Lalala" which was performed by Regine Velasquez and Piolo Pascual for the soundtrack

Larry Poons (b.1937 in Tokyo, Japan) is an American artist known for his pursuit of painting, which began in 1959 and continues apace today.
From 1955 to 1957 Poons studied composition at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In 1959, he saw Barnett Newman’s exhibition at French & Company in New York and subsequently relinquished music studies to enroll at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. After graduation, he moved to New York where he had his first solo exhibition in 1963 at Richard Bellamy’s Green Gallery.
In 1965, MoMA curator William Seitz included Poons in “The Responsive Eye” along with Josef Albers, Larry Bell, Ellsworth Kelly, and Ad Reinhardt. In 1969, Poons was the youngest artist to participate in "New York Painting and Sculpture, 1940–1970,” curated by Henry Geldzahler at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other artists included in the landmark survey were Hans Hoffman, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Jules Olitsky.
