Viola Shafik (anhören/?; * 24. Juni1961 in Schönaich, Baden-Württemberg) ist eine deutsch-ägyptische Filmwissenschaftlerin, Kuratorin und Filmemacherin. Ihre Dissertation zum arabischen Film stellte Ende der 1990er Jahre die erste filmwissenschaftliche Darstellung der Filmproduktion und -rezeption in arabischsprachigen Ländern Nordafrikas und Westasiens in deutscher sowie danach in englischer Sprache dar und wurde auch in Ägypten verlegt. Shafik trat auch als Dokumentarfilmerin und Dozentin für Filmwissenschaft hervor und hat Filme für Festivals in Berlin, Venedig und arabischen Ländern kuratiert. Ihre Veröffentlichungen behandeln Aspekte wie die Darstellung von Menschen als „den Anderen“ in für Europäer fremden Kulturen, Genderrollen und das soziale Umfeld des Kinos in arabischen Ländern.

Biography:

Viola Shafik is an Egyptian-German freelance filmmaker, scholar and theorist. She studied Fine Arts in Stuttgart and Middle Eastern studies and German literature in Hamburg. She finished with a Ph.D. in 1994 which was published in 1998 by American University in Cairo Press. She went to American University in Cairo to teach and also at Züruch University. Additionally, Shafik served as the position of the Head of Studies of the Documentary Campus MENA program and was a Fellow at the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study. Shafik has also been involved in curating film festivals, translating German television and is a member of the selection committee of the World Cinema Fund at the Berlinale. She also was a member of the independent jury of Jordanian and Arab filmmakers at Jordan Film Fund.
