Janette Oke, the creative mastermind behind the “Love Comes Softly” series spoke with The Dove Foundation a short time ago about her success and years of working in the faith and family market as an inspirational author. We began the interview by asking Janette if her “Love Comes Softly” novel was planned as a series of stories, or as one tale.

“I thought it was a single book story,” she said. “I probably wouldn’t have even thought of a series if the readers hadn’t been asking what happens next. The publishing house talked it over with me and we decided maybe we should do a second book and they just kept coming” she chuckled.

We asked her how many novels yet remained to be filmed. “They’re up to book number six. Initially I stopped with book number eight and then the readers were still wanting to know what happened next—we added another four!”

So there are several others which could be filmed?

“Could be, if they should decide to go that route. We would continue on with the story of a granddaughter, but Clark and Mart

How Did Janette Oke Invent Christian Romance?

Since 1979, Janette Oke has graced the lives of worldwide readers with her Christian romance novels, story books for children, and devotional books. Her books have been translated into over 14 languages. The Christian publishing industry recognizes her as a trendsetter regarding faith and family fiction—she essentially invented the Christian romance genre we know today.. 

What Should You Know about Janette Oke?

“Sometimes love isn’t fireworks, sometimes love just comes softly,” one character says in Okey’s first Christian romance novel, Love Comes Softly, published by Bethany House in 1979. It launched her writing career—which continues over 40 years later. She has at least 80 books published, including ones she co-authored several books with her daughter, Lauren Oke Logan, and with author T. Davis Bunn.

Her work reached a new level of exposure in 2003 when film producer and director Michael Landon, Jr. made Love Comes Softly into a movie. One by one, each book in this series became a film. In an interview with the editor

About the Author

Janette Oke (pronounced "oak") was born in Champion, Alberta, Canada, during the depression years. She graduated from Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Alberta where she met her husband, Edward. She and Edward married in 1957 and went on to serve churches in Calgary and Edmonton, Canada, and show more Indiana. Oke published her first book, Love Comes Softly, in 1979. The book experienced immediate success because works of fiction were a virtually unknown genre in the Christian publishing industry. Oke has gone on to publish some 36 romance novels, earning her the 1992 President's Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. She is the author of the "Love Comes Softly" and the "Prairie Legacy" series of books. Oke enjoys a large reading audience primarily comprised of teenagers, homemakers and working women.
