Since the major labels lost the power to write the rules of the music industry, DJ-producers—as curators of cool, adept at arranging sounds and talent—have been well positioned to forge an alternate path. According to Diplo, the 36-year-old DJ, producer, label head, radio host, product endorser, and all-around impresario, that path involves becoming an entrepreneurial brand.
What’s amazing is that he started on that path a little more than a decade ago. Born Thomas Wesley Pentz, Diplo went from a kid in central Florida obsessed with Miami bass music to a college student at Temple University who threw one of the hottest parties in Philly and released mixtapes that spread his reputation well beyond the city limits. Next he built a recording studio/gallery/event space in Philadelphia called the Mausoleum.

Thomas Wesley Pentz (born November 10, 1978),[2] known professionally as Diplo, is an American DJ and music producer. He is a co-creator and lead member of the electronic dancehall music project Major Lazer; a member of the supergroup LSD, with Labrinth and Sia; a member of electronic duo Jack Ü, with producer and DJ Skrillex; and a member of Silk City, with Mark Ronson. He founded the record company Mad Decent in 2006, as well as the non-profit organization Heaps Decent the following year. His 2013 extended play (EP), Revolution, debuted at number 68 on the US Billboard 200. The EP's title track was later featured in a commercial for Hyundai and is featured on the WWE 2K16 soundtrack.
Diplo worked with and dated British musician M.I.A.; Diplo produced her 2008 breakout single "Paper Planes," which gave him initial mainstream exposure. In 2011, he and fellow producer Switch formed the electronic musical group Major Lazer and its namesake cartoon series for FXX,& Thomas Wesley Pentz (born November 10, 1978), better known by his stage name Diplo, is a Philadelphia-based American DJ, producer, and songwriter. Together with DJ Low Budget, he runs Hollertronix, a club and music collective. He also founded and manages record company Mad Decent, as well as the not for profit organization Heaps Decent. Among other jobs, Pentz has worked as a school teacher in Philadelphia. During his rise to notability, Diplo worked with British musician M.I.A., an artist who is credited with helping expose him in his early career. Later, Pentz and fellow M.I.A. producer Switch created a Jamaican dancehall project titled Major Lazer.
