Russian hockey player
Often called the greatest goaltender of all time, Vladislav Tretiak continues to impact the world of hockey with his words of wisdom and his vast experience.
He made his mark in hockey at the tender age of 20 in the 1972 Summit Series, where the Soviets played against the Canadians. He continually crafted his game and became feared in the hockey arena. He had one dark spot on his record, the 1980 Olympic games. It is a memory that haunts and angers him to this day. However, he did not let his anger consume him. He went on to win a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, retiring afterward. He continues to inspire up and coming goalies through various partnerships with hockey schools in Russia and the United States, as well as the National Hockey League (NHL). With a career punctuated by over ninety medals, a testament to his hockey prowess, Tretiak is perhaps equally well remembered for his character.

Vladislav Tretiak is a Soviet ice hockey player, legendary goaltender and coach. Three-time Olympic Champion (1972, 1976, 1984).
He started playing hockey at the age of 11, at the CSKA Youth Sports School on Leningradskiy Prospekt, where his mother brought him. At first, Tretiak played as a striker, but he was embarrassed by the lack of a hockey uniform, which was not enough for everyone. At that time, the team did not have a goaltender. Then he approached coach Vitaliy Erfilov and said that if he was given a real uniform, he would be a goaltender. In the summer of 1967, CSKA coach Anatoli Tarasov became interested in the young goaltender. Tretiak began to train with professional players. Together with his team, Tretiak became the champion of Moscow, receiving the prize of the best goaltender.
In 1969-1984 he defended the gates of CSKA and the USSR national team. He played 482 matches in the USSR Championship, 117 games at the World Championships and the Olympic Games. In Canada Cup tournaments Vladislav Tretiak played 11 matches.

Vladislav Aleksandrovich Tretiak
Biography [Source: legendsofhockey.com] (May 18, 2004) -- "I spent my early childhood in a small town called Dmitrovo, not far from Moscow," begins Vladislav Tretiak, the first Soviet elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Tretiak was born April 25, 1952, the son of a physical education teacher. A love of sports rubbed off on the young Tretiak. "Many of the future hockey stars like (Alexander) Bodunov, (Gennady) Lapshenkov and (Vassili) Titarenko went through her (his mother's) class," he mentions. After participating in sports, including track and field, basketball, volleyball and skiing, Tretiak discovered hockey. "I found an old wooden stick with a funny curve at the end of it," he laughs. It was his mother's field hockey stick. "I found out she had participated in the Moscow championship. In the 1930s, all females played field hockey in Russia. I forgot all about my other toys when I first saw that hockey stick. I pushed rocks around in the backyard with it," says Vladislav.
