Dr. Paul L. Walker, one of the Church of God’s most influential leaders, passed away on February 23, 2021 at the age of 89.

Walker, perhaps best-known for his nearly 40-year leadership as pastor of the Mt. Paran Church of God in Atlanta, was elected to the highest office of general overseer for the Church of God in 1996. In a non-traditional move, Walker’s ministerial colleagues elevated the popular leader to the post straight from the pastorate at the general assembly of 1996. Walker served the full term of four years, from 1996-2000, being re-elected general overseer in 1998.

Born in Minot, North Dakota, Walker was called to the ministry in 1950 and attended Lee College, Presbyterian College, Emory University, and Georgia State University.

He began his ministry with the Church of God serving as State Sunday School and Youth Director of California from 1955-1959, and one year in the same post (1959-1960) at Tennessee.

Paul William Walker IV[1] (September 12, 1973[2] – November 30, 2013) was an American actor. He was best known for his role as Brian O'Conner in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Biography

Dr. Walker obtained a BS degree in Biology from Albright College in 1983, a PhD degree in Anatomy from Temple University in 1987, and performed a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuroscience at Rutgers University from 1987-1990. He has been a full-time faculty member in the Department since 1990 and was promoted to his current rank as Professor in 2002. Dr. Walker previously studied neural signaling mechanisms in the basal ganglia relevant to movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. He is now fully engaged in fulfilling the School of Medicine’s educational mission to medical students and residents in field of human anatomy. In 2015, Dr. Walker was appointed director of the Medical Gross Anatomy course which offers a full cadaver dissection experience to Yr-1 medical students and is the centerpiece of a new pre-clerkship curriculum that emphasizes professional development along with the obtainment of anatomical knowledge.
