Terry Kinard is the most decorated football player in Clemson history. Those honors will grow today and on Nov. 3 when he is inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Clemson Ring of Honor.

Today’s presentation will be made by former ACC Commissioner Gene Corrigan on behalf of the College Football Hall of Fame. Kinard will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December at the annual National Football Foundation ceremonies in New York . He will also be honored at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, IN in August 2002.

The Ring of Honor ceremony will take place at Death Valley prior to the Florida State game. It will be a special day for Kinard as it will also be the day we celebrate the 20-year anniversary of Clemson’s National Championship, the greatest team accomplishment in Clemson football history.

Editor’s Note – This is the 40th anniversary of Clemson’s first national championship season in 1981. For each program in 2021, Tim Bourret takes us back to that season with features on players or games from the landmark year.


Only one recruiting class in ACC history has had two student-athletes who went on to make the College Football Hall of Fame…the 1978 Clemson freshman class that included Terry Kinard and Jeff Davis. In 2001, Kinard was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, then Davis followed him six years later.

A look to what Clemson teams have accomplished in the last 10 years and what some Florida State classes did in the 1990s indicates there might be a Dabo Swinney signing group or a Bobby Bowden recruiting class that will join the Tigers’ 1978 class. But for now, the 1978 Clemson class stands alone in ACC history.

Terry Kinard, a former NFL star and current coach of the Manning Junior High School football team, was recently honored by the New York Giants as one of their Top 100 Players of All Time. The recognition, which celebrated the Giants’ 100-year anniversary, highlighted Kinard’s illustrious professional football career, during which he helped the team secure a Super Bowl victory and cemented his legacy as a defensive powerhouse.

Kinard, born Alfred Terance Kinard on November 24, 1959, in Bitburg, West Germany, began his athletic career as a standout at Sumter High School in South Carolina. After graduating in 1978, he went on to play college football at Clemson University. Kinard’s time at Clemson was marked by impressive achievements, including being named a two-time consensus All-American and earning the title of CBS National Defensive Player of the Year in 1982.
