Television executive Joel Stillerman ’84 visited campus April 11 to give students advice on how to create a hit TV show.

“You never know things are going to be a hit,” he said. “The [shows] were both just fantastic stories with a reason to exist, which is something that I think is pretty important.”
Stillerman recalled Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan’s pitch for the show, saying it was “Mr. Chips turns into Scarface.”
“[It was] the most brilliant boiled-down-to-its-essence, character-driven pitch maybe in television history,” Stillerman said.

After a months-long search, HuluCEO Mike Hopkinsannounced today that Joel Stillermanwill join the company as chief content officer.
In the newly-created position, Stillerman will be responsible for evolving and driving the overall content strategy for the company, and will oversee Hulu’s content acquisitions, originals development and content partner management teams.
Stillerman will join Hulu’s senior management team this summer and will report directly to Hopkins.
Craig Erwichwill maintain his current role as Hulu’s senior vice-president and head of content and increase his focus on the company’s original programming.

NEW YORK, NY – June 16, 2015 – AMC and SundanceTV today announced a new senior leadership structure, including the elevation of Joel Stillerman to President of Original Programming and Development for both AMC and SundanceTV, and the appointment of AMC Networks veteran Jan Diedrichsen to the newly created position of Executive Director of SundanceTV. This follows the recent appointment of Charlie Collier as President and General Manager of SundanceTV, adding to his oversight of AMC.
Stillerman, who joined AMC in 2008, has guided AMC’s development of an eclectic mix of owned and licensed shows, including “The Walking Dead,” “Talking Dead” and other dramas including “Hell on Wheels,” the “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul” and the upcoming “Fear the Walking Dead” and “Into the Badlands.” He will now oversee programming for both AMC and SundanceTV.
