In 1988, Knight and Mike Whitehill started a freelance writing partnership providing material for television, and later co-created the Celador-produced Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, which won awards around the globe including a BAFTA, National Television Awards, Indie Awards, Broadcast Awards, New York Festival, Silver Rose of Montreux and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
Knight has had four novels published: The Movie House, Alphabet City, Out of the Blue and, in 2011, his first children’s novel, The Last Words of Will Wolfkin.
Knight’s first screenplay, Dirty Pretty Things, directed by Stephen Frears, premiered at the 2002 Venice Film Festival to outstanding reviews and was selected to open the prestigious London Film Festival. Let’s start, however, with the blacksmith’s son who launched a million haircuts.
We meet shortly before Knight’s Peaky Blinders begins its fifth season on BBC One. It advertises the writer’s knack of finding the drama in stories – gangsters from Birmingham! – that no one else even saw as stories.
Over 30 episodes it has grown into an epic. BBC viewers, initially confused, were given time to adjust to its heightened style, and Netflix viewers all over the world have followed them. It is an example of how co-productions work best: the BBC, says Knight, leaves him alone and the US cable channel FX digs into its deep pockets.

Steven Knight (CBE) is a leading British screenwriter, producer and director.
He is the creator, executive producer and writer of BAFTA-winning television series Peaky Blinders, starring Cillian Murphy, as well as of further hit series including Taboo (BBC/FX), SAS Rogue Heroes (BBC), This Town (BBC), The Veil (FX) and All the Light We Cannot See (Netflix) which earned multiple nominations including for ‘Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television’ at the 2024 Golden Globes. Knight co-created international game show phenomenon Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
His first penned film, Dirty Pretty Things, was directed by Stephen Frears and opened the London Film Festival. It won four BIFAs, the 2005 Humanitas Prize for Film and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, among other honors. Further screenplays for film include Eastern Promises and Spencer, and three that he also directed: Hummingbird, Locke and Serenity.
