Ricky Dale Medlock, age 62, passed away tragically while hiking with friends on July 20th, 2019.
American musician, born 17 February 1950 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Guitarist with Blackfoot (3) and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Rick was born in San Diego at Mercy Hospital on July 4, 1947.

"The blues can mean pretty much anything in real life - you know, normally it's about somebody's lost loved one or somebody's lost love, or tragedies within themselves, or no work, no money. Then they turn to drinking and drugs and they write the blues, that's the blues within themselves. They say that the blues had a baby and they called it rock 'n roll, which is very true: rock 'n roll was born out of the blues from the Mississippi all the way to Chicago. I gotta tell you, when we play with Lynyrd Skynyrd today we rely on that, we rely on our roots from the past. Even when we make new records, we think about that. So, to me, the blues is born out of a natural feeling, a natural life experience and what you go through."

In Autumn 2007, Rick Medlock won the London Photographic Association Gold Award for his images of Coventry's subways, which were taken from Subways and Bridges - the first part his project, Anatomy of an Island.

Hannah Tobin from the BBC Coventry & Warwickshire website caught up with Rick and asked him about his triology of photographic books that look at the city centre of Coventry.

Have you lived in Coventry all your life?

I was born in Leamington Spa. My parents lived in Kenilworth in a disused army hut that was situated where Kenilworth Castle main car park is now situated. We moved to the Whitley area of Coventry when I was three-years-old after my mother discovered a dead rat on my brothers bed.

When and how did you come up with the idea of creating a the project - Anatomy of an Island?

The idea was developed while I was doing my photography qualification at Sandwell College. It formed the final piece of my end of year major project.
