Shariatullah, Haji (1781-1840) was an eminent Islamic reformer of Bangladesh. The district of Shariatpur is named after him. He was born in 1781 in a petty Talukdar family at the village Shamail under the then Madaripur sub-division of greater Faridpur district. He emigrated to Makkah in 1799, returned to Bangladesh in 1818 and started an Islamic revivalist reform movement, akin to the contemporary Arabian Wahhabism. The movement he started came to be popularly known as the faraizi movement. His reform movement was basically religious; but it touched upon various other aspects of the society. He may be characterised as an Islamic revivalist, a social reformer and a populist peasant leader.

Haji Shariatullah (Bengali: হাজী শরীয়তুল্লাহ; 1781–1840) was a prominent religious leader and Islamic scholar from Bengal in the eastern subcontinent, who is best known as the founder of the Faraizi movement. In 1884, the Shariatpur District was formed and named after him.[1]

Early life

Shariatullah was born in 1781 into a family of Taluqdars in Shamail,[2] a village in present-day Shibchar, Madaripur.[citation needed] His father was Abd al-Jalil Taluqdar, a landowner of limited means. His mother died when he was a child.[2]

At around eight years old, Shariatullah lost his father and was then taken care of by his uncle, Azim ad-Din, who nurtured him in a very loving manner and made Shariatullah's youth "carefree" with little concern for discipline. Early life
Haji Shariatullah was born in east bengal Faridpur district, in 1781. He was the son of an ordinary farmer. After getting his early education from his village, he went to Arabia in 1799 to perform Hajj at an early age of 18 years he stayed there for next 19 years and was greatly influenced by beliefs of Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Wahab. He got education from the Madrasa al Rahimia (founded by Shah Waliullah's father, Shah Abdul Rahim). He was the one who gave Muslims their rights in difficult times. He had a son named Mohsin-ud-din.
